Lest we forget - Remembrance Day in Daylesford
A range of commemorative services and events took place throughout Victoria to mark Remembrance Day on Monday November 11.
At the Daylesford Cenotaph, a Remembrance service and wreath laying took place with people coming together alongside the local Daylesford RSL to honour all those who served and sacrificed for our nation in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year is a time when people pause and observe a moment of silence across the world to remember those who have lost their lives in service and mark the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I.
Other traditions include wearing a red poppy on the left lapel, flying flags at half-mast from 10:30-11:03am, playing the Last Post, reciting the Ode or remembering those who have served from the local area.
From Hygge, Lieutenant Catherine Webster and Lieutenant Jason Webster - two Reserve Infantry Officers Based at Ballarat were both honoured to attend the Daylesford Remembrance Service with their family.
Speaking at the Service, Lieutenant Catherine spoke about the immense sacrifices made by those who served and the profound cost of peace. An extract from her reflection:
From Daylesford alone, over 100 men enlisted to serve in World War I, and many of them never returned. One such story is that of Private Robert Anderson: Born in Creswick, enlisted at Daylesford in August 1914. He served with the 7th Infantry Battalion and was among the first to embark to Gallipoli, where he lost his life on April 25, 1915, the very day of the ANZAC landing.
So today, as we stand together in solemn remembrance, we honour not only the courage of those who served but the profound selflessness that led them to give everything for a cause greater than themselves.
Lest we forget.
