Ballarat's Foto Biennale

In its 10th year, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (BIFB) challenges audiences to ask ‘What is real in a world that is bombarded with images?’ under the banner The Real Thing.

Headlining this year’s festival is the world premiere of renowned photographer Platon’s People Power - an exclusive exhibition of arresting portraits of people who have shaped our world including Michelle Obama, Vladimir Putin and Vivienne Westwood.

There are over 2000 works by 200 artists on display in around 100 venues across the city and greater Ballarat including the RACV Goldfields Resort in Creswick.

Ballarat’s inner city laneways and streets are housing a number of open programs, including the infamous snub-nosed Golden Monkey installation by artist Lisa Roet on Lydiard Street (image below). The piece forms part of an art series imitating endangered monkeys.

As well as photographic exhibitions, the festival will be putting on workshops, masterclasses, trivia, tours, competitions, a kids hub, talks, walks, performances and more.

BIFB are currently developing a permanent art gallery and institution by establishing a National Centre for Photography. BIFB’s reputation and cultural acumen have led to Ballarat being chosen as the place to develop the National Centre.

The National Centre will be located in the beautiful heritage-listed former bank building (pictured below). Hygge Property director Joe currently sits on the board for BIFB and sub-committee for the National Centre.
