Talking tourism in Geelong
The Property Council of Australia recently hosted a Geelong Outlook Event with the thriving tourism industry fuelling Geelong’s economy as the central focus. Key players and experts from the local tourism scene discussed the state of tourism in Geelong.
Keynote addresses were delivered by Andrew Borger, Chief Investment and Operating Officer, Quintessential and Natalie O’Brien AM, Chief Executive of Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
An expert panel discussion followed where perspectives, experiences and visions for the role of tourism in Geelong’s economic growth were shared. The panel, which was moderated by Hygge Senior Development Manager Jess Newton, included Tony Brun, Chief Executive Officer of Melbourne Avalon Airport.
Some of the discussion points on the day included the impact a convention centre could have on the local economy, the importance of a supply chain of a skilled workforce to fulfil tourism and hospitality roles and the potential for Geelong to become a ‘twin city’ to Melbourne, rather than a ‘regional city.’
The possible growth of Avalon Airport with 3.3 million people within a one-hour catchment was also a central consideration.
The event was attended by a broad range of stakeholders in the Geelong region, all with a keen interest in being part of a dialogue to shape the future of tourism in the region.
