Buyers are striking it rich in Ballarat – affordable and sublimely preserved period homes and a coffee, restaurant and arts scene to revival the big smoke, which has sparked a price surge.

In some postcodes of Ballarat, median house prices have increased by double figures over the past 12 months. The five-year price growth, between 39 per cent and 159 per cent, flags a new golden age for the city.
